New York City’s visual artist Shantell Martin was brought in to collaborate with Saks Fifth Avenue for a special event immersing invited guests in a black and white world of hands on interactive art. The event celebrated the upcoming arrival of Saks to Canada. As Saks Fifth Avenue prepared to open its stores across Canada they wanted to bring some New York to Toronto, and as a New York based artists, Martin was a natural fit.
Martin was invited to create a larger than life drawing which would immerse its guests in her world, and featured a talk by the artist. What made the massive work of art even more interesting was that guests also got to be part of it, with Shantell Martin personally writing their names on the wall. Everything was black and white. Besides the strict black and white dress code, even the hors d’oeuvres served that evening were black and white.
